3 new G-Master additions to Sony’s full-frame system
Sony adds three new high-end G series lenses to its full-frame system
The new 50mm, 40mm and 24mm additions combine incredible image quality with intuitive control
Today, Sony announced three exceptional G series lenses, completing its impressive E-mount lens system – FE 50mm F2.5 G (model SEL50F25G), FE 40mm F2.5 G (model SEL40F25G), and FE 24mm F2.8 G (model SEL24F28G). All three lenses provide high image quality and beautiful bokeh in a lightweight and compact design, ideal for both photographers and videographers who desire memorable shots and easy mobility.

When used with a full-frame or APS-C Sony camera, the three lenses feature high resolution, intuitive and easy control, and fast, precise, and quiet autofocus. The lenses are the ideal choice for capturing photos and videos, suitable for a wide range of applications from quick snapshots on the go, to portrait and landscape photography.
“At Sony, we are constantly innovating to produce the tools creators need to capture the beauty of the world,” said Yann Salmon Legagneur, Director, Product Marketing, Digital Imaging, Europe. “With their superb resolution and delightful bokeh, packed into a compact and elegant design, the FE 50mm F2.5 G, FE 40mm F2.5 G and FE 24mm F2.8 G allow users to experience the joy of owning lenses that can capture different perspectives of the same scene.”
Each of the three prime lenses offers a different focal length for every type of shot, with the 50mm being best for portraits, the 40mm being optimal for quick on-the-go photography or videography, and the 24mm being ideal for landscapes. With their intuitive operation and exceptional build quality, they are an outstanding trio.
Furthermore, all three lenses have the same size (68mm diameter x 45mm), the same filter size (49mm), nearly the same weight (FE 50mm F2.5 G 174g, FE 40mm F2.5 G 173g and FE 24mm F2.8 G 162g), and internal focus, making lens changes easy, even when using a gimbal. They feature the same stylish design, but depth of field scales are clearly marked for quick changes.

High Resolution in a Compact Design
The FE 50mm F2.5 G, FE 40mm F2.5 G, and FE 24mm F2.8 G deliver the high image quality characteristic of G series lenses, while being compact and lightweight. Image quality is achieved through state-of-the-art optics using aspherical and ED (extra-low dispersion) elements that provide high resolution and suppress chromatic aberrations. Aspherical elements ensure high resolution in every corner of the image, even at the widest aperture and shallow depth of field. Enjoy high-resolution photos in a compact design.
The stunning bokeh of the G series lenses is achieved through an optimized circular aperture at each lens's highest F-value (F2.5 for 50mm, F2.5 for 40mm, and F2.8 for 24mm).
All three lenses are precisely engineered for optimal mobility and with their compact, lightweight design, they are suitable for any location. Whether shooting with a full-frame or APS-C body, portrait photography, landscapes, quick snapshots on the go, or videos with a gimbal, the size and weight of the lenses are perfectly balanced. Experience the benefits of interchangeable lenses to be prepared for any scene and subject.
Focal Lengths
In addition to the 50mm focal length, ideal for portraits and snapshots, the FE 50mm F2.5 G has a minimum focusing distance of 0.35m (AF) / 0.31m (MF) and a maximum magnification of 0.18x (AF) / 0.21x (MF), making it ideal for many different scenes and subjects.
The focal length of the FE 40mm F2.5 G 40mm is ideal for quick shots or videos on the go and has a minimum focusing distance of 0.28m (AF) / 0.25m (MF) and a maximum magnification of 0.20x (AF) / 0.23x (MF). Especially for videography, 40mm is the preferred angle of view as it corresponds to the natural field of vision, and when used for photography, the 40mm lens allows subjects to stand out from the background.
With its wide-angle focal length of 24mm, the FE 24mm F2.8 G lens is ideal for situations where you want to include the background, such as shooting with a gimbal or a selfie with a mounted grip. With a minimum focusing distance of 0.24m (AF) / 0.18m (MF) and a maximum magnification of 0.13x (AF) / 0.19x (MF), the lens also allows you to shoot close-ups with a defocused background.
Convenience and Reliability
Despite their compact size, the lenses include a focus hold button, a focus mode switch, an aperture ring, and an aperture click switch for maximum functionality and convenience. The focus hold button can be customized from the camera menu, assigning a function preferred by the user. The aperture ring provides a more intuitive and direct feel than if the aperture is controlled from the camera body, both when shooting photos and videos. The aperture is also controlled by a click switch, and this option can be disabled when shooting video using a button. Thanks to Linear Response MF technology, the focus ring reacts precisely and linearly during manual focusing for instant and intuitive control, allowing content creators to directly realize their vision and make fine focus adjustments.
The aluminum body and engraved Sony logo give the lens a high-quality and elegant finish and contribute to its greater robustness and durability. For added convenience, the filter thread diameters on the lens hood and on the lens body are the same (49mm), allowing the same cap or filter to be placed on the lens hood and body. The lenses are also designed to be moisture and dust resistant so they can be used in all conditions.
Fast, Precise and Quiet Autofocus
The FE 50mm F2.5 G, FE 40mm F2.5 G, and FE 24mm F2.8 G feature two linear motors for fast and precise autofocus with excellent tracking without interruption even with abrupt changes in subject movement, making the lens ideal for quickly capturing moving subjects. Autofocus is also quiet, making it suitable for both photos and videos.
