Sony announced its new, 60th E-mount lens - the FE 50mm F1.2 G Master™
Sony Alpha system is complemented by the introduction of the new, 60th, E-mount lens, the FE 50mm F1.2 G Master™
Sony's newest lens delivers superb resolution, exquisite bokeh, and improved autofocus performance in a compact design
Today, Sony unveiled details about the latest addition to the company's G Master full-frame lens series – the FE 50mm F1.2 GM (model SEL50F12GM), which complements the Sony G Master series with its excellent resolution and impressive bokeh, industry-leading AF (autofocus) technology, professional control, and reliability, all packed into a compact and lightweight design. With a maximum aperture of F1.2, the lens combines impressively shallow depth of field for maximum expressive freedom and exceptional light sensitivity, allowing for faster shutter speeds and lower ISO in low light. This makes it ideal for portraits, wedding photography, video, and more.
“We are excited to present our 60th E-mount lens – the FE 50mm F1.2 GM, which offers new freedom of creative expression and ease of use, for both stills and video, like any lens with an F1.2 aperture,” said Yann Salmon Legagneur, Director of Product Marketing, Digital Imaging Division, Sony Europe. “We always listen to what our customers tell us to provide them with the best possible digital imaging technologies. The FE 50mm F1.2 GM, our first F1.2 lens for the α brand, has been uncompromisingly developed to meet the constantly evolving needs of modern content creators.”
Excellent Resolution and Beautiful Bokeh
The FE 50mm F1.2 GM features state-of-the-art optics, including three XA (extreme aspherical) elements, which contribute to achieving high resolution across the entire image area, maintained even at F1.2. The new lens ensures clear images even in backlit scenes, thanks to Sony's Nano AR Coating II technology, which effectively minimizes internal reflections to prevent flares and ghosting.
The FE 50mm F1.2 GM creates the impressive bokeh characteristic of G Master at maximum aperture F1.2, which adds volume to every image. With a newly developed 11-blade diaphragm and a finely tuned optical design with minimal spherical aberrations, the lens achieves smooth bokeh in depth in both the foreground and background.
Advanced Autofocus and Tracking at F1.2
The lens can maintain precise focus on subjects even with extremely shallow depth of field, using fast, accurate, and silent AF with tracking, thanks to four XD (extreme dynamic) linear motors that provide high driving efficiency. When precise focusing is needed, especially when shooting 4K video with human eye tracking, the FE 50mm F1.2 GM allows the user to focus on composition, thanks to its extremely short response time with minimal delay and low vibration levels. The lens's floating focus mechanism, controlled by a specially designed lens drive algorithm, achieves high resolution in every focus area at a minimum focusing distance of 40 centimeters.
Professional Control and Reliability in a Compact Form
The FE 50mm F1.2 GM was specifically designed with content creation professionals in mind. With convenient controls and features such as Linear Response MF, an aperture ring with on/off click switch, a focus mode switch button, and two customizable focus hold buttons, the FE 50mm F1.2 GM combines ease of use with professional control over the process. The FE 50mm F1.2 GM also features a dust and moisture-resistant design and a fluorine coating on the front elements, which protects the lens from fingerprints, dust, water, oil, and other contaminants. Developed using the latest simulation technologies and optical design advancements, the lens is astonishingly compact and lightweight (φ87x108mm, 778g), ensuring easy mobility and handling compared to other 50mm F1.2 models.
