Canon's new flagship EOS R3 and new RF lenses

Новият флагман EOS R3 и нови RF обективи на Canon

The wait is over – Canon’s new sports flagship is here and it boasts speed and performance

Sofia, Bulgaria, September 14, 2021 – Canon Europe today introduces the highly anticipated EOS R3 – the new superstar in sports and news photography. Combining tradition with cutting-edge technology, the EOS R3 combines all the intuitiveness and speed of Canon's renowned EOS-1 series with the innovations and flexibility of the revolutionary EOS R system.

Designed based on feedback and recommendations from the most demanding photojournalists and sports photographers, the EOS R3 incorporates over 100 improvements over Canon's mirrorless and DSLR models. The result is a camera that significantly streamlines operations and creates a new type of connection between the camera and the photographer, providing unmatched speed and responsiveness. With its brand-new and innovative 24.1-megapixel sensor, the EOS R3 provides an optimal balance of performance, resolution, and speed to give photojournalists and sports photographers a tool to outperform and outpace the competition.

The Future is Speed

Thanks to the revolutionary new 24.1-megapixel stacked, back-illuminated CMOS sensor, the EOS R3 delivers lightning-fast image capture and improved responsiveness. The powerful sensor almost completely eliminates distortion when shooting with an electronic shutter, and with its high maximum shutter speed (from 30 seconds to 1/64000 sec.1) helps sports photographers capture even the fastest-moving subjects. When using the electronic shutter, photographers can shoot up to 30 fps with AE/AF tracking even in RAW format (15 fps and 3 fps shooting are also supported). For the first time, the electronic shutter can also be used with both Canon and third-party flashes. Eliminating the traditional weaknesses of electronic shutters, Canon has introduced a flicker detection function and a high-frequency flicker mitigation mode to detect and prevent interference in captured images or issues with color or exposure.

The high performance of the EOS R3 applies not only to high burst rates but also to high focusing speed. Capable of focusing within 0.03 seconds, the EOS R3 is the fastest camera in the EOS R series to date2 – ideal for capturing unexpected scenes in sports or news photography. Equipped with Dual Pixel CMOS AF II technology, the EOS R3 uses advanced AI algorithms that enable AF tracking, including human and animal eye, body and face, as well as human head recognition when shooting stills and video. As the model is also designed for the needs of motorsport photographers, Canon has also included a vehicle tracking function for precise tracking of motorcycles, open-wheel Formula 1 cars, as well as GT and rally cars – with the ability to prioritize the car or the driver's helmet. Eye, face, head, and body recognition are now available in all autofocus modes, and users can now flexibly select the size and shape of the "Zone AF" area. The EOS R3 sets new standards with its ability to focus in light conditions down to -7.5 EV3, making it one of the best cameras for low-light shooting.

For maximum control over all these autofocus functions, the EOS R3 offers three different ways to select AF points: the fast intelligent controller, the precise multi-function controller, and instinctive eye-controlled AF. Eye-controlled AF provides a more organic connection between the camera and the photographer. This intuitive and innovative method of AF point selection moves the focus point to where the photographer's gaze is directed. In situations where things can happen quickly, this allows photographers to instinctively focus on the action with just a glance.

Improving handheld shooting capabilities and stable video recording on the move, the built-in 5-axis image stabilizer can be combined with the optical stabilizer of some RF lenses, providing unmatched image stabilization for up to 8 stops lower shutter speed.

Be Faster Than Your Peers

For professional photographers shooting in the field, not only the shooting speed but also the speed of sending material to editors is important. With a variety of professional communication capabilities, including built-in Bluetooth 5.0 and 5 GHz4 Wi-Fi support, the EOS R3 optimizes workflow and simplifies connection to a smartphone or Wi-Fi network. Ideal for sports arenas, the built-in Gigabit Ethernet port provides a high-speed wired connection. And when speed is critical, photographers can send images to clients via FTP. Current users of the EOS R55 and EOS-1D X Mark III can share network settings between the three cameras.

Users can remotely control the camera from a mobile device using the Canon Camera Connect app or by using the Browser Remote function via an Ethernet connection. A popular feature of the EOS-1D X Mark III, Browser Remote allows users and headquarters to remotely change metadata, view, and download images. Users will also have the option to use Canon Mobile File Transfer (MFT)6 – an app for smart devices aimed at professional photographers that transfers images to an FTP/FTPS/SFTP server via a 4G/5G network when Wi-Fi communication is not available. In the future, the app's functions will be expanded to include text and voice messaging. The new smartphone accessory for the EOS R3 – the AD-P1 smartphone adapter – allows users to attach their iOS or Android device to the multi-function shoe adapter and easily transfer images via the new MFT app7. The Canon Camera Connect app now allows EOS R3 firmware updates via your smartphone – a first for EOS cameras.

Incredible Video Recording Capabilities

Like the EOS R5, the EOS R3 takes the hybrid functionality of Canon cameras to the next level, allowing photographers to capture both high-quality stills and impressive high-resolution video. It offers powerful video recording capabilities, recording 6K 60p RAW resolution, which provides 50% higher detail compared to 4K. 6K CRM RAW files allow exposure and white balance to be adjusted after shooting to achieve impressive image quality. 4K video up to 60p is oversampled from 6K resolution, ensuring the highest possible quality 4K video. Excellent for capturing high-speed and dynamic sports scenes, the EOS R3 records 4K 120p video for impressive slow-motion playback. It is now possible to record up to six hours of video in normal settings or 1.5 hours of high frame rate video at 119.88/100p8 .

The EOS R3 is designed with the primary goal of helping photographers stay ahead of their competitors – the same applies to video recording. To reduce file size and speed up video workflow, CRM light or MP4 video can be recorded in All-I, IPB, or the more compact IPB light format, allowing users to choose from a wide range of bitrates according to their needs and file size requirements. The two card slots, one for a UHS-II SD card and one for an ultra-high-speed CFexpress card, make it possible to shoot 6K RAW video and support simultaneous recording to both cards in MP49, ensuring the security of important recordings. Canon's renowned Canon LOG 3 format allows 10-bit internal recording for a wider dynamic range or 10-bit HDR PQ recording, which minimizes the need for editing or color corrections during post-production. The EOS R3 is particularly suitable for traveling reporters – it is equipped with Canon's new multi-function shoe and is compatible with the new DM-E1D directional stereo microphone – a camera-powered stereo microphone using digital processing – and the TEAC Tascam CA-XLR2d-C XLR adapter, which allows two-channel recording with professional XLR microphones.

Instinctive Shooting

Canon's latest mirrorless model boasts the high speed and workflow familiar from the EOS-1, and is equipped with a new, Canon-developed electronic viewfinder with no blackout when the shutter is released, offering a high-quality image with 5.76 million dots, minimal image lag, and a refresh rate of up to 120 fps at full resolution to achieve an image that rivals that of an optical viewfinder. Along with the newly introduced View Assist function, simulating an optical viewfinder, this viewfinder provides richer tones and a wider dynamic range. Shutter lag can be reduced to an astonishing 20 ms – less than half that of a conventional camera, for almost instantaneous capture when the trigger is pressed. The new movable high-resolution 4.1 million dot touchscreen provides more detail than ever before and offers greater flexibility for shooting from different angles thanks to its ability to tilt and swivel into various positions. Combining existing EOS ergonomics with new controls and extensive customization options, including an audible shutter sound with volume control, the EOS R3 provides a familiar yet enhanced user experience. To save time when changing cameras, photographers can easily copy and store customized settings on memory cards. Equipped with the same LP-E19 battery as the EOS-1D X Mark II and EOS-1D X Mark III, the EOS R3 provides longer shooting times and greater compatibility with existing DSLR cameras.

The EOS R3 features a new, lightweight, dust and water-resistant magnesium alloy body for use in harsh conditions. Weather resistance is maintained even when using existing Speedlite flashes when mounted via the new AD-E1 multi-function shoe adapter. The EOS R3 also powers the new compact Speedlite Transmitter ST-E10 via the multi-function shoe, allowing photographers to remotely control multiple Speedlite flashes via radio communication.

The EOS R3 is a high-performance, responsive camera that gives sports photographers and photojournalists the competitive edge they need to get the winning shot.

With its wide f/2.8 aperture, this lens performs excellently in low-light conditions, as well as when shooting at high shutter speeds. These characteristics allow vloggers to capture high-quality video in low light and create shallow depth of field even when shooting wide-angle, so subjects stand out against a blurred background. This lightweight prime lens is a fantastic companion for the traveling vlogger. When looking for a narrower angle of view for video recording, users can use the RF 16mm F2.8 STM with an EOS R camera to shoot in APS-C crop mode, increasing the lens's focal length to 25.6mm. Equipped with Canon's STM focusing motor, the RF 16mm F2.8 STM allows for smooth and quiet focusing when recording video. Thanks to its minimum focusing distance of 0.13m, photographers and content creators can capture sharp images even when shooting from very close up.

RF 100-400mm F5.6-8 IS USM: Get closer to the action

Designed for aspiring sports and wildlife photographers, this zoom telephoto lens offers a versatile 100-400mm focal length range, ideal for capturing distant subjects. When shooting from the sidelines of a football pitch, for example, the RF 100-400mm F5.6-8 IS USM provides photographers with the same incredible reach as professional telephoto lenses, allowing them to capture the players' movements and emotions in detail. In addition to its telephoto characteristics, the RF 100-400mm F5.6-8 IS USM also offers a minimum focusing distance of 0.88m1 and a maximum magnification of 0.41x2, so photographers can capture all the details of the subject up close. The RF 100-400mm F5.6-8 IS USM offers optical image stabilization for a 5.5-stop slower shutter speed, which increases to 6 stops when used on cameras equipped with in-body image stabilization (IBIS). Designed for high speed and precision, the RF 100-400mm F5.6-8 IS USM features a Nano USM motor for smooth and fast focusing, and the lens control ring gives photographers easy control over shutter speed, aperture, ISO, and exposure settings. The bright viewfinder and extended ISO sensitivity of EOS R cameras, combined with Dual Pixel CMOS AF technology, allow photographers to use a lens that redefines traditional notions of size, weight, and focal length range, to easily capture their desired images.
