Canon Expands Product Range for TV and Cinema Productions
New Canon tools provide broadcasters and filmmakers with enhanced functionality and flexibility to create high-quality 4K content using optimized workflows
Sofia, September 9, 2022 – Canon today expands its offerings for broadcasters and filmmakers in line with user needs with a suite of products: including the CN8x15 IAS S E1/P1 – the latest motorised cine lens for a variety of applications, the EU-V3 – a modular expansion unit for the EOS C500 Mark II and EOS C300 Mark III, a firmware update for Cinema EOS, and the DP-V2730 – a 27-inch professional 4K reference display that seamlessly integrates into broadcasters’ and filmmakers’ workflows.
Capture the world in cinematic quality: CN8x15 IAS S E1/P1
With a superb combination of focal length, compact size and light weight, the CN8x15 IAS S E1/P1 supports Super 35mm format cameras, making it ideal for a range of TV and film productions. With its flexible focal length range – from a wide angle (15mm) to an impressive telephoto zoom (120mm), the CN8x15 IAS S E1/P1 can further extend its focal length to 180mm via its built-in 1.5x extender without changing the full-frame sensor coverage. For future productions, 8K optical performance is supported across the full range of focal lengths, ensuring high image quality across the entire frame.
Designed with uncompromising image quality in mind, the CN8x15 IAS S E1/P1 recreates Canon’s renowned warm colours in harmony with Canon’s existing range of cinema lenses and uses an 11-blade aperture, creating a beautiful and smooth bokeh. Offering outstanding optical performance – and breathtaking image quality for HDR, 4K and 8K productions – the CN8x15 IAS S E1/P1 supports EF mount communication, advanced metadata transmission compatible with Cooke /i Technology™, and is also the first motorised cine lens to support ZEISS eXtended Data™ (XD) communication when working with a PL mount. Featuring the same 16-bit encoder used in Canon's studio and existing motorised cine lenses, which provides precise metadata for lens position, zoom, focus, and aperture, the CN8x15 IAS S E1/P1 supports information and communication functions that are paramount for virtual, VFX, and film productions.
The CN8x15 IAS S E1/P1 motorised cine lens is available for both EF and PL mounts and includes a powerful detachable servo drive unit. This provides convenient shoulder-held operation for ENG/EFP or news-style shooting and access for accessories required for film productions.
EU-V3: Modular expansion unit for live productions, compatible with EOS C500 Mark II and EOS C300 Mark III
With the increasing migration to large-format sensor cameras for live TV, news, and sports productions – providing viewers with a unique picture when watching their favourite teams play – Canon listens to user wishes with the EU-V3 expansion unit for the EOS C500 Mark II and EOS C300 Mark III. Building on the modular concept of both cameras, it expands and supports specific functionalities for integration into multi-camera setups and live productions.
The EU-V3 offers the exclusive SDI Return feature, allowing real-time monitoring of the image from the production's video mixer. The output port for the return signal can be selected from the VIDEO, EVF-V50, MON/HDMI, and SDI-OUT ports. The EU-V3 also allows Tally signal support via Ethernet using the XC protocol – when the expansion unit receives a Tally signal, the camera indicators light up, a Tally indication appears on the display, and a signal can be relayed to an external device via a 4-pin Hirose interface. SDI Return and Tally functions are essential for informing camera operators when signals from their cameras are live, as well as the current production status.
The lens focus position can also be displayed on screen when using the EU-V3 – with compatible television and motorised cine lenses via a 12-pin interface. The focus position scale, which can be displayed at the top or right of the screen, allows users to store multiple focus positions on a distance scale and informs them when focus is achieved in manual mode – such as when focusing on the start/finish line for a race.
The EU-V3 can be combined with the CN8x15 IAS S E1/P1 lens when working with both the EOS C500 Mark II and the EOS C300 Mark III.
Cinema EOS Firmware: Expanding Horizons
Canon is introducing a new firmware update for Cinema EOS cameras to expand functionalities for the live broadcast and TV production market for both the EOS C500 Mark II and EOS C300 Mark III – allowing both cameras to be used in live environments and workflows. Key updates include:
- XC Protocol Support: Integration into multi-camera setups with support for direct control via RC-IP100 and Ethernet connection.
- AF Function Enhancements: Support for 120p/100p AF along with face detection during high or low frame rate recording.
- 4-channel Audio Level Indicator: The audio level indicator will display all four audio channels when this mode is selected.
- Support for New Accessories and Lenses: Allows the EOS C500 Mark II and EOS C300 Mark III to work perfectly with both the CN8x15 IAS S E1/P1 and the EU-V3, as well as support for the Flex Zoom lens series.
DP-V2730: Next-generation 4K HDR display
The advanced DP-V2730 professional 4K HDR display uses a 4K UHD panel with 1000 cd/m² full-screen peak brightness and Canon's local dimming backlight technology, which provides an ultra-low black level of 0.001 cd/m². A great choice for both television and film productions, the DP-V2730 features a 27-inch screen, achieving high brightness with minimal noise, which is ideal for both on-set and post-production environments. The ultra-high brightness, detail in dark areas, and wide colour gamut of Canon across the full screen area achieve Dolby Vision certification and Grade1A according to EBU TECH3320 standards[i]. The DP-V2730 features a suite of acclaimed monitoring functions, such as waveform monitor, histogram, frame luminance monitor, RGB Parade, and many more – all provided by Canon's latest processing platform for class-leading performance. The display is a great aid in television and film productions, providing high-end 4K HDR performance for on-set, OB vans, post-production, VFX, and colour grading.
The DP-V2730 features an HDMI input and 12G-SDI ports (4 inputs and 5 outputs) capable of outputting 4K60P 4:2:2 10-bit or 4K30P 4:4:4 12-bit signals, ideal for seamless integration into various workflows. The DP-V2730 can be easily connected to a computer, tablet, or smartphone and supports Canon's multi-screen configurations (via LAN connection) through the remote control web interface. This interface, optimised for touch operations, provides real-time image monitoring, detailed signal information, and direct control over inputs, monitoring functions, and settings[ii]. Users can also benefit from a 4-way SDI input switch via a paid upgrade, which supports different workflows, such as sending video signals to a director's monitor, an external recorder, or a live transmission system.
