Canon introduces its first full-frame 8K camera Canon Cinema EOS
Lightweight and compact, the EOS R5 C is a hybrid cinema camera designed for a new generation of content creators
The EOS R5 C, Canon’s first full frame, 8K Cinema EOS hybrid camera
Canon Europe today announced the EOS R5 C – a powerful, hybrid cinema camera that combines the professional video capabilities of the Cinema EOS range with the photographic capabilities of the EOS R system. With its high-resolution full-frame CMOS sensor, DIGIC X processor and RF mount, the camera offers high-quality, precise 8K video recording and 45-megapixel stills at up to 20 frames per second. Building on the revolutionary impact the EOS 5D Mark II had on the video industry, the compact and versatile body of the EOS R5 C meets the needs of a new generation of content creators. Additionally, reinforcing the Cinema EOS camera lineup, Canon also announced a significant enhancement to the EOS C70 via a firmware update. Alongside other features, this update will add 12-bit Cinema RAW Light recording to the already exceptional capabilities of the Cinema EOS.

Canon's first hybrid camera from the Cinema EOS family
As the first hybrid camera from the renowned Cinema EOS system, the EOS R5 C is capable of internal 8K 30p RAW recording and up to 60p when using an external power source, achieving exceptional clarity and endless post-production possibilities. Thanks to the internal active cooling system, content creators can enjoy high-quality 8K video recording for hours. With HDR support via PQ and HLG, as well as Canon's popular Canon Log 3 gamma, video creators can shoot breathtaking, realistic content with greater expressive possibilities to truly immerse the viewer in the story. With Canon's acclaimed autofocus system - Dual Pixel CMOS AF, the camera offers Eye AF and EOS iTR AF X, ensuring precise focus on every shot. This advanced autofocus technology tracks people's eyes in real-time and can even follow their heads as they look away from the camera. The camera features electronic image stabilization with coordinated control, which, working in combination with Optical IS in compatible lenses, reduces camera shake when shooting handheld, for smooth footage and sharp images.
Thanks to its 45-megapixel sensor and DIGIC X processor, the EOS R5 C features cutting-edge image performance and incredibly fast shooting speeds of up to 20 frames per second. The DIGIC X processor also enables innovations in noise processing, allowing sensitivity up to 51,200 ISO – ideal for shooting in low light conditions, such as indoor sporting events. Offering greater creative freedom to photographers, 10-bit HEIF images can be captured with an extended dynamic range and color gamut. Additional features are also possible, with the interval timer allowing the capture of incredible high-resolution content.
Optimized 8K Workflow
The EOS R5 C records Cinema RAW Light internally to support 12-bit footage with high precision, color gamut and wide dynamic range, all in a manageable file size. Canon also introduces three newly developed RAW variants, including RAW HQ (high quality), RAW ST (standard quality) and RAW LT (optimized quality), so users can choose the mode based on their shooting needs and production process. Two card slots – a CFexpress 2.0 Type B slot and a UHS-II SD card – allow for extended simultaneous recording options, where different formats, resolutions and bit depths can be recorded to each card simultaneously, for flexible workflow possibilities. This also facilitates audio recording when shooting high frame rates, in 4K 120p. Alongside 12-bit Cinema RAW Light, the EOS R5 C supports Canon's popular 10-bit XF-AVC format up to 810 Mbps and highly flexible MP4 options. Utilizing its full-frame 8K sensor, the EOS R5 C enables 4K and Full HD recording with exceptional clarity, color, and low noise through internal oversampling. This also facilitates recording high frame rate content at 4K 120p resolution, without cropping the angle of view and maintaining autofocus.

Versatile and Connected
With the EOS R5 C, Canon provides professionals with a versatile tool that can help them meet the ever-widening demands expected of content creators. Built around the innovative RF mount, which features a short flange back distance, as well as a 12-pin connection for faster communication between the camera body and lens, the EOS R5 C can be used with all Canon EF, RF and cinema lenses. As demand for VR content increases, the combination of 8K video with the new Canon RF 5.2mm F2.8L Dual Fisheye Lens makes it easier to produce immersive VR footage from shooting to processing. In addition to lens versatility, this camera features the same versatile multi-accessory shoe found on the EOS R3 and XF605 for direct connection and power to accessories such as the Canon DM-E1D stereo microphone, Canon Speedlight 470EX-AI, and TASCAM's CA-XLR2d audio XLR adapter. The EOS R5 C is also equipped with a dedicated Timecode In/Out terminal for professional multi-camera integration. With the camera's advanced connectivity, users can use the Content Transfer mobile app for FTP transfers and ML-G2 metadata editing – ideal for reporters and solo operators.
Familiar Compact Body
To truly offer the best of both worlds, the EOS R5 C has two separate menus for stills and video – the EOS R system and the Cinema EOS interface. Controlled by a three-position power switch, users can seamlessly switch between modes and access relevant settings. With 13 programmable buttons and a range of professional video features, the EOS R5 C allows for incredible customization. This cinema tool also features a high-resolution 0.5-inch OLED viewfinder with 5.76 million dots for accurate image reproduction, a top display for quick checking of camera settings, and a bright articulating 3.2-inch HD LCD monitor for convenient framing from multiple angles, day or night.
Designed with solo operators in mind, the EOS R5 C utilizes an ultra-light 680-gram chassis, making it the smallest and lightest Cinema EOS camera to date. While compact by nature, this camera features a durable magnesium alloy body and is dust and weather resistant, thanks to an intuitive design that separates airflow from electrical components.
EOS C70 Firmware Update
The latest EOS C70 firmware update unlocks advanced capabilities, including an added option for Cinema RAW Light LT 4K recording and XF-AVC proxy recording. Creators can take advantage of all the new creative possibilities and improved image quality from the EOS C70, thanks to Cinema RAW Light LT and new options for stop-motion animation and time-lapse video recording. With the firmware released in December 2021, users can also enjoy greater compatibility with 12 additional lenses when using the EF-EOS R 0.71x lens adapter, with full optical correction, metadata and autofocus support, giving video creators enhanced flexibility in lens selection.
