The RF-S 3.9mm F3.5 STM DUAL FISHEYE facilitates the capture of high-quality immersive content.
Bulgaria, Sofia, June 10, 2024 – Canon today announces the new RF-S 3.9mm F3.5 STM DUAL FISHEYE – an APS-C lens for creating virtual reality (VR) content, which joins the EOS R system in addition to the existing RF 5.2mm F2.8L DUAL FISHEYE. This new lens makes recording high-quality 3D VR content even more accessible to everyone – including novices.
Dual Fisheye lenses consist of two separate fisheye lenses placed side-by-side to simulate human binocular vision. Each lens captures an image from a slightly different perspective, creating two separate images corresponding to the left and right eye's fields of view. This stereoscopic effect adds depth to the image in virtual reality, making the perception more immersive.

The RF-S 3.9mm F3.5 STM DUAL FISHEYE provides left and right fields of view, precisely combined in a compact optical system with two fisheye lenses, and expands the range of cameras that are part of the EOS VR system. What's more, this new lens enters the market at a more affordable price compared to previous models, making the creation of high-quality and immersive content more accessible – while maintaining the high optical performance of the EOS R system.

The new 144-degree recording angle provides a narrower field of view compared to VR180. This, coupled with the large depth of field, makes it easier for users to set up equipment and focus on the subject – with less worry about additional equipment like lighting or tripods. The focusing ring, which can be programmed for another function such as aperture control or ISO sensitivity for more practicality, allows users to keep their attention on the action. The RF-S 3.9mm F3.5 STM DUAL FISHEYE is Canon's first 3D autofocus lens, offering a one-shot autofocus setting for an even easier shooting process.
This is the first non-L series lens with a premium Air Sphere coating, which prevents optical distortions such as glare and ghosting. It is also equipped with two UD elements per lens, which helps achieve high image sharpness. The f/3.5 aperture ensures high-quality shots when shooting in various indoor and outdoor locations. This makes all scenes accessible for creative storytelling in 3D – from dimly lit forests to brightly lit stadiums. For even greater creative flexibility, the RF-S 3.9mm F3.5 STM DUAL FISHEYE has a rear filter holder for threaded or gel filters.

When viewing content shot with the RF-S 3.9mm F3.5 STM DUAL FISHEYE through a VR device, the 3D stereoscopic lens provides a high level of realism. The 144-degree viewing angle ensures a natural, forward-oriented view that engages peripheral vision to fully engross the viewer. When observed through a compatible device, simulations come to life thanks to the 60-millimeter distance between the lenses, which is very similar to that of human vision – providing a realistic 3D effect for objects.
With the growing demand for VR content (the market is projected to grow to over $22 billion by 2025), the latest lens makes the creation of 3D content – from gaming and education to tourism, documentaries, and entertainment – more accessible. The lens is designed to work with Canon's EOS R system, optimizing the workflow for VR content creators.
