Canon EOS R5 and EOS R6 Unrivalled performance, unlimited creativity

Sofia, Bulgaria, 09 July 2020 – Canon today introduces the EOS R5 and EOS R6 – two advanced full-frame mirrorless cameras from the revolutionary EOS R System, which uses the promising RF mount. The professional EOS R5 model can shoot 45-megapixel stills at up to 20 fps1 and is the world’s first full-frame mirrorless camera to offer internal 8K RAW video recording at up to 29.97fps and 4K video at up to 120p. The EOS R6 is ideal for enthusiasts and professionals transitioning to mirrorless, who are looking for wider creative possibilities. The camera can capture 20.1-megapixel stills at up to 20 fps1, impressive 4K video at up to 60p, and Full HD video at up to 120p. The EOS R5 and EOS R6 are cameras with unrivalled speed and resolution.

Next-generation professional mirrorless system

Next-generation CMOS sensor technology, combined with high-performance RF lenses, allows users to capture images with even higher levels of detail at market-leading speeds. The EOS R5 and EOS R6 can capture continuous shots at up to 20 fps1 with the electronic shutter completely silently with full auto exposure (AE) and tracking autofocus (AF). Users can confidently capture the action in stills or video with exceptional quality and in any location, without disturbing their subjects. The mechanical and electronic first curtain shutter allow for high-speed continuous shooting at up to 12 fps1.

For the first time in the EOS series, the EOS R5 and EOS R6 are equipped with a 5-axis in-body image stabiliser (IBIS), which is an advantage when working with all types of lenses. Designed to work in conjunction with the RF lens stabilization system, the solution is designed so that RF lenses and the sensor work to correct longitudinal tilt and horizontal rotation, with the sensor correcting X-Y axis movements and transverse tilt. This intelligent stabilization system compensates for an incredible 8 stops slower shutter speed2 – the best image stabilization in the world2 – and unlocks new levels of creativity when shooting with low shutter speeds or recording handheld video.

The large diameter of the RF mount ensures that light reaches the entire sensor, even with sensor movement due to the in-body image stabilizer. The 54mm diameter allows RF lenses to be designed with a larger circular image projection, providing a greater range of motion for the in-body IS system, meaning that some RF lenses without image stabilization, such as the RF 85mm F1.2L USM or RF 28-70mm F2L USM, can also achieve 8-stop slower shutter speed stabilization2.

Users of EF lenses will enjoy improved IS system performance, as the in-body image stabilizer works in conjunction with EF lenses with image stabilizer to provide correction for transverse tilt and X-Y axis movements. Even EF lenses without image stabilization will improve their performance thanks to the 5-axis stabilization supported by the EOS R5 and EOS R6's in-body IS system.

High sharpness

The DIGIC X processor, built into the EOS R5 and EOS R6 – the same as in the flagship EOS-1D X Mark III – supports next-generation Dual Pixel CMOS AF II technology, elevating speed and reliability to unrivalled levels. The world's fastest AF system achieves focus in just 0.05 seconds3, with the EOS R5 able to focus at light levels down to -6EV5, and the EOS R6 is the first EOS camera to achieve focus at a minimum level of -6.5EV4,5. The high-precision AF system performs even in low light or low contrast conditions.

The iTR AF X system is programmed using a "deep learning" algorithm (an artificial intelligence method) and the face/eye detection mode ensures that subjects are well focused even when moving unpredictably with a shallow depth of field. Even if a person briefly turns away, the system continues to track the head.

Advanced subject tracking, provided by deep learning algorithms, recognizes human faces and eyes, and now includes cats, dogs, and birds in stills and video modes. The EOS R5 and EOS R6 support high-precision focusing and tracking regardless of the subject's size, posture, orientation, or facial direction, allowing users to shoot confidently even with unpredictable subjects.

Smart communication

With built-in Bluetooth and Wi-Fi communication, the EOS R5 (5Ghz Wi-Fi8) and EOS R6 (2.4Ghz Wi-Fi8) can be easily connected to smartphones and networks for high-speed file sharing and FTP/FTPS transfer. This functionality also allows the cameras to be controlled remotely via the Camera Connect and EOS Utility apps and to shoot directly to PC or Mac computers via Wi-Fi or high-speed USB 3.1 Gen 2 connection. Sending content is just as important as capturing images and video. The EOS R5 and EOS R6 support automatic image transfer from the device to the image.canon cloud platform for easy image sharing and printing or integration with Google Photos9 or Adobe Creative Cloud9 workflows.

EOS R5: No Compromises

The EOS R5 marks an unprecedented leap in mirrorless camera technology, offering the highest resolution yet6 for an EOS camera. The combination of the DIGIC X processor, CMOS sensor, and RF lenses improves all aspects of image quality, achieving a resolution of over 45 megapixels. Up to 100% AF area coverage7, 5940 selectable AF points, and an ISO range of 100 – 51,200 are features that ensure perfectly focused subjects even in very low light conditions. The dual card slots support a high-speed CFexpress card and an SD UHS II card, housed in a weather-resistant magnesium body.

Professionals can internally record stunning 8K 12-bit RAW video, using the entire sensor, achieving a true cinematic feel with continuous AF tracking of human and animal eyes and faces. The EOS R5 also sets new standards for video creators shooting in 4K.
