For the first time in Bulgaria: Atlas Lens Co tests at Dynaphos studio
Last weekend, at F2Studio by Dynaphos, we presented the complete Mercury series from Atlas Lens Co and specialized lenses from the Orion series. Journalist Betina Mihaylova, who proved to be a model with exceptional stage presence, posed for the lenses. Here are the impressions of some of the event participants on how the image changes when shooting not with spherical but with anamorphic glass, and with different types of cameras.
Emilian Dechev, who admits he hasn't yet had a chance to thoroughly review the test results:
"So far, my favorite Mercury is the 42mm - wide enough to show the anamorphic effect without much distortion, and it's relatively sharp even at f/2.8. And at f/4, it's super! The flare is a very pleasant yellow color, but that's characteristic of the whole series."
Lachezar Hristov, who has only shot with anamorphic lenses once before:
"We're talking about Blazars, which are much cheaper than the Atlas lenses we're testing. In reality, the differences are many. The flares are much higher quality, although I'm not a huge fan of the ones seen here either. I might use different attachments to remove them. They are much sharper, don't have such distortion, such aberrations, and overall it's clear that they are much more expensive lenses, with higher quality craftsmanship."
Tsvetomir Varbanov, who traveled especially from Varna with his Sony FX6 camera for the three-hour anamorphic lens test:
"I am pleasantly surprised, especially by the wide ones - the 54mm and 42mm look great and are very sharp: just the way I like it. As for the flare - that's a matter of taste, but it's a very good performance. There are truly creative solutions. 1.5 is a pretty serious squeeze factor, which therefore requires a different kind of thinking and imagination for framing. I mean, people are used to the golden ratio, while 1.5 is practically two separate screens, and accordingly, one has to think about it directly for a large screen."
