Sony introduces the world's smallest and lightest G-Master wide-angle zoom lens.

August 29, 2023 – Sony announced the launch of a G Master™ wide-angle zoom lens FE 16-35MM as a 35mm full-frame α™ (Alpha™) E-mount lens covering focal lengths from 16mm to 35mm with a maximum aperture of F2.8 throughout the zoom range.

FE 16-35MM GM meets the needs of photographers and videographers seeking high-performance lenses, and the imaging power and high-speed AF (autofocus) that characterize all G Master series lenses maximize camera performance. In addition, as the world's smallest and lightest lens¹, it is ideal when greater shooting flexibility is desired.

As part of the expansion of the wide-angle zoom lens lineup, a second-generation zoom lens with a maximum aperture of F2.8^[i], as well as standard (24-70mm) and telephoto (70-200mm) lenses, will also be available. These lenses, which are the lightest in the world,^[ii] offer excellent resolution, further enhancing the capabilities of the Alpha system in diverse shooting environments.

World's smallest and lightest F2.8 wide-angle zoom lens with high resolution

Thanks to a new optical design that effectively features an extremely precisely crafted XA (extreme aspherical) lens, FE 16-35MM GM achieves high resolution even at the maximum aperture of F2.8 throughout the zoom range. This is made possible by the new aspherical shape, offering greater freedom than before. In addition to the stunning expressive bokeh of the G Master series with a wide viewing angle, the lens also offers exceptional close-up performance across the entire zoom range, with a minimum shooting distance of 0.22m and a maximum shooting magnification of 0.32x. In addition, Sony's original Nano AR Coating II suppresses unwanted flares and ghosting to capture clear images even when a strong light source is in the frame. This is the world's smallest and lightest wide-angle zoom lens with an overall length of 111.5mm and a weight of approximately 547g, which is about 20% lighter^[iii] compared to the previous model.

Extremely fast and precise AF that brings out the best in the camera

FE 16-35MM GM employs the latest XD (extreme dynamic) linear motors that operate efficiently for high-speed drive. This achieves quiet AF, suitable for both stills and videos, and is up to twice as fast as standard models⁴. You can track the subject even in high frame rate videos where there is a visible change in focus. In combination with an α1 body, it is possible to achieve high-speed continuous shooting up to ^[iv] 30 fps with fast, precise, and quiet focus.

Functionality and reliability for greater convenience in shooting photos or videos

FE 16-35MM GM offers convenient functionality and excellent performance for shooting photos and videos, meeting the needs of any professional or avid amateur. Compared to previous models, you can achieve high-quality expressive shots without fluctuations in the viewing angle, thanks to reduced unwanted focus shift during video recording. Additionally, the lens suppresses center of gravity shift during zooming and allows for stable shooting, so you can comfortably shoot even from a stabilizing system. For greater functionality, an aperture control ring, which can be locked with a button, and two focus hold buttons, to which any desired function can be assigned from the camera body, have been added.

The front lens features a fluorine coating for easy removal of dirt accumulated on its surface . The lens also has dust and splash resistance, allowing you to use your camera even outdoors ^[v] without worry.

The new FE 16-35MM GM will be available from September at prices starting from approximately 5499 BGN.
