Sony Introduces the Compact FX2 Camera – A New Addition to the Cinema Line Series

Sony представя компактната камера FX2 – ново попълнение към серията Cinema Line

The new FX2 combines the elegant design and ease of use of the Cinema Line series with high-quality capture capabilities and a movable viewfinder.

Sony is proud to introduce the latest addition to its Cinema Line series – the FX2. This camera is the ideal choice for independent creators and teams seeking flexibility and high quality in their filmmaking.

“The FX2 was created to meet the needs of our customers. This full-frame camera is easy to use and includes new features that facilitate filmmaking. We are particularly proud of the new movable viewfinder, which makes work more convenient and efficient. The FX2 retains the core values of the Cinema Line – cinematic footage, reliability, and professional use, helping creators capture true emotions in every shot,” shares Yan Salmon-Legagneur, Head of IP&S Marketing, Sony Europe.

FX2 Features: Full-Frame Movie and Still Photography Capabilities

The FX2 comes with a full-frame sensor that produces impressive images and beautiful bokeh effects, similar to other cameras in the Cinema Line series. The new camera features a 33-megapixel1 Exmor R™ sensor and offers a wide dynamic range of over 15 stops when using S-Log3. This allows for capturing impressive details in both the highlights and shadows of the frame. The FX2 has a dual base ISO for S-Log3 - 800 and 4000, ensuring excellent image quality under various lighting conditions. ISO sensitivity for video can reach up to 102400, which is ideal for shooting in low light. The FX2 supports various recording formats, simplifying post-production workflow. The FX2 can record in 4:2:2 10-bit All-Intra format and supports formats such as XAVC S-I DCI 4K at 24.00 frames per second, among other options.

Simeon Sadokko, cinematographer and student, comments: “The camera impressed me a lot. Dual Base ISO works perfectly – the shots are clean and noise-free, and switching between settings is easy and fast.”

The FX2 stands out with extended shooting capability – up to 13 hours of continuous recording in 4K 60p2, thanks to its built-in cooling fan and efficient heat dissipation structure. The camera also offers variable frame rate settings – up to 60 frames per second in 4K mode (for a maximum slow-motion effect of up to 2.5 times) and up to 120 frames per second in Full HD (for slow motion up to 5 times). The FX2 supports Log shooting in Cine EI, Cine EI Quick, and Flexible ISO modes, providing diverse workflows for various production needs. To enhance the camera's cinematic expression, creative teams can import up to 16 custom LUTs for video preview directly into the camera. This allows for precise color control right on set.

Filmmakers can easily and quickly create cinematic looks directly in the camera. S-Cinetone™ is set as the standard setting, and the camera also offers a rich set of preset Picture Profile and Creative Look options. A desqueeze display is available, supporting anamorphic lenses with 1.3x and 2.0x coefficients for precise framing.

Cinematographer Stefan Kren, who shoots commercials and product footage, shares: "The image quality and color science gave me the look I was after. Skin tones were clean, the dynamic range handled challenging lighting well, and the footage was incredibly easy to process. I felt like I was working with a true cinema tool, but without the usual weight and complex setup."

Enhanced Usability for Convenient Solo Operation

The FX2 shares the same compact design with a flat top panel as Sony's FX3 and FX30 Cinema Line cameras, ensuring consistency and compatibility across different configurations. The integrated mounting holes (UNC 1/4-20 x3) allow for cage-free use and tripod mounting, offering greater flexibility in equipment. The optional top handle improves mobility and control, especially when shooting handheld or in dynamic situations. The lightweight and portable design – measuring 129.7 x 77.8 x 103.7 mm and weighing approximately 679 grams – makes it ideal for solo operators or small film crews.

The camera offers advanced focusing features designed for precision and creativity. The new Real-time Recognition AF provides fast and reliable performance with improved accuracy for human subjects. Intelligent object recognition also covers animals, birds, vehicles, and insects, with an automatic mode available for seamless detection. For even greater control, the camera includes tools such as: focus breathing compensation, AF Assist, customizable autofocus speed and sensitivity during transitions. These features give creators the flexibility to fine-tune focus for expressive, cinematic images.

The camera introduces Active Mode and Dynamic Active Mode for the first time in the Cinema Line series. Both modes are designed to provide smooth and stable handheld shooting. The FX2 Auto Framing* feature automatically crops and tracks the subject to keep it centered when the camera is mounted on a tripod. This creates footage that appears to be shot by an experienced operator. The Framing Stabilizer feature automatically maintains the subject in the same position within the frame. This is particularly useful, for example, when the operator moves with the subject.

From a photography perspective, the camera offers an additional Log shooting option with a newly added "Log shooting" menu. This feature allows creators to capture high-quality 33-megapixel stills optimized for color grading in post-production3. The FX2 also offers seamless operation with a MOVIE/STILL mode switch lever, allowing for quick transitions between video and still shooting. Depending on the selected mode, the displayed menu items automatically adjust. Additionally, mode selection is simplified by long-pressing the Fn button, which changes the shooting mode.

FX2 Features: Enhanced but Familiar Hardware Inherited from Sony Cinema Cameras

The camera features a new high-resolution 3.68-million dot tilting electronic viewfinder (EVF)4, with a viewing angle optimized for video production and equipped with a deep eyecup. It also includes a 3.0-inch vari-angle touchscreen LCD for easy framing from any position. Controls are intuitively placed on the top panel and around the grip, with recording indicator lamps. A customizable "BIG6" (home) screen displays frequently used parameters such as: FPS (frames per second), ISO - shutter speed (angle/speed), look presets, white balance, aperture or ND filter status. In response to the growing trend of creating content shot in vertical 16:9 format for social media, the FX2 also displays vertical information during shooting. Additionally, the model with the included handle (ILME-FX2) comes with: two XLR/TRS terminals and a 3.5mm stereo (mic) mini jack. These inputs allow for professional 4-channel, 24-bit digital audio recording.

The camera offers a rich set of capabilities and connectivity with other devices. It features an HDMI Type-A terminal, capable of outputting video up to 4K 60p 4:2:2 10-bit and 16-bit RAW5 for high-quality recording and monitoring. For seamless data transfer and remote control, the FX2 supports dual-band Wi-Fi (2.4 GHz and 5 GHz6), as well as wired LAN via a compatible adapter7. In addition, the USB Type-C port allows SuperSpeed USB 10Gbps data transfer and supports USB Power Delivery (PD) for power. Built-in USB and network streaming support enables live broadcasting and remote production workflows8.

Social Responsibility

In line with Sony's ambitious "Road to Zero" initiative, this product supports the company's vision of achieving a zero environmental footprint by 2050. The manufacturing process reflects this commitment through facilities powered entirely by renewable energy sources9. The camera includes multiple accessibility options, including a screen reader function10 and display magnification, to assist visually impaired users across an expanded set of menu items. Additional intuitive controls enhance usability for all operators, including:

  • Real-time recognition autofocus, which reduces the need for manual adjustments
  • Optimized touch operations for direct menu navigation
  • Tactile button design with clear differentiation

These inclusive design elements ensure that professional imaging tools remain accessible to creators of all abilities while maintaining full functionality.

The FX2 will be available from August 2025.
