Sony Introduces FE 24-50 F2.8 G - Compact and Bright with Exceptional Optical Performance
Sony has launched its new compact 35mm full-frame E-mount lens, compatible with α™ (Alpha™) – the FE 24-50 F2.8 G. It is a standard zoom lens with a maximum aperture of F2.8 throughout the entire zoom range. Despite its small size and weight, it achieves the high resolution and beautiful bokeh characteristic only of a fast F2.8 G series lens. The FE 24-50 F2.8 covers focal lengths from 24mm to 50mm, allowing for both everyday shots and portraits, as well as high-quality video footage without the inconvenience of a bulky body, as its compact design fits into even the smallest lens bag.
Key features of the FE 24-50 F2.8
Recent advancements in optical and mechanical design allow for compact dimensions: a filter diameter of φ67 mm, a maximum diameter of 74.8 mm, a length of 92.3 mm, and a weight of approximately 400 g.
The precise arrangement of four aspherical lenses and two ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass elements effectively reduces aberrations, including chromatic aberrations, thereby reproducing clear and detailed images at all focal lengths from the center to the edges of the frame.
The FE 24-50 F2.8 uses an 11-blade circular aperture, which, together with optimized spherical aberrations, ensures the beautiful, soft, and smooth bokeh that is a hallmark of the G lens series.
The lens offers a minimum focusing distance of 0.19 meters (AF) at the wide end and a maximum magnification of 0.30 x (AF) for high-quality close-up shots.
The quality is also evident in the AF (autofocus) mechanism, which integrates two linear motors, providing higher speed and precision for silent autofocus. The lens supports high-speed continuous shooting with AF/AE tracking up to 120 frames per second when used with the Alpha 9 III full-frame mirrorless camera[1]. For those seeking reliable video performance, the lens offers AF tracking at high frame rates of 4K 120p or FHD 240p for video recordings[2] where maximum control over focus management is required. The lens also supports the built-in Active Mode for image stabilization[3], allowing for stable footage even while walking. It is also compatible with the cameras' focus breathing compensation function, which allows for high-quality and expressive videos[4]. The linear response MF allows for precise and intuitive manual focus control, contributing to smooth footage with even richer expression.
The design of the FE 24-50 F2.8 is geared towards ease of operation, with features including a customizable focus hold button, an aperture control ring, an ON/OFF click switch, and a focus mode switch, all ensuring high functionality and the ability to adjust every detail. Additionally, for further ease of use, the lenses are designed with dust and moisture resistance[5] and a fluorine coating to prevent dust particles from adhering to the lens surface.
