FE 400-800mm F6.3-8 G OSS (SEL400800G) – Sony's First 800mm Super Telephoto Zoom Lens

The FE 400-800mm F6.3-8 G OSS is an entirely new lens for the Alpha system, offering high resolution across its entire zoom range, beautiful bokeh, and fast, precise, and accurate autofocus (AF). The internal zoom mechanism minimizes changes in the center of gravity, ensuring stable framing. The lens is compatible with separately sold 1.4x and 2x teleconverters^[1], which can extend the maximum focal length to 1600mm, making it ideal for capturing birds, wildlife, sports, aviation, and landscapes.

The FE 400-800mm F6.3-8 G OSS is an Alpha series lens covering a super-telephoto range from 400mm to 800mm, and with a 2x teleconverter, the maximum focal length can reach 1600mm. Thanks to its internal zoom mechanism, the length of the lens remains unchanged, which keeps the center of gravity stable for better handling and control. Smooth and easy rotation of the zoom ring ensures precise magnification, and the precise design prevents accidental changes in focal length.

Beautiful Image Reproduction and Natural Bokeh Across the Zoom Range

The FE 400-800mm F6.3-8 G OSS features a circular 11-blade aperture that creates a beautiful spherical bokeh effect with a soft and creamy background when shooting with shallow depth of field. Six ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass elements effectively reduce chromatic aberrations, while flares and unwanted reflections in backlighting are minimized for cleaner and more detailed images.

A specially developed algorithm for the XD motors improves response and eliminates delays and vibrations often encountered when driving large focus groups. The lens also features a focus range limiter switch (FULL/10m-NEAR/∞-8m), allowing for optimized control based on the subject distance. Additionally, reduced focus breathing improves video quality.

The FE 400-800mm F6.3-8 G OSS can be easily used handheld without the risk of blur, thanks to the built-in Optical SteadyShot™ image stabilization. Stabilization is even more effective when used with Alpha cameras featuring in-body image stabilization. The lens construction is balanced and robust, and the tripod collar can be quickly rotated between horizontal and vertical positions, thus supporting a variety of photographic scenarios.

Precise Control and Reliability in All Conditions

Three focus hold buttons, located 90° apart around the lens barrel, allow for easy access in various orientations and can be customized for additional functions. The internal zoom mechanism and dust and moisture-resistant design^[3] ensure high reliability, while the fluorine coating on the front element protects against contamination and facilitates lens cleaning. Additionally, the Full-time DMF function automatically activates manual focus when the focus ring is rotated, facilitating fine adjustments or a complete change of focus. The lens hood features a new design, including a locking button and filter slot, which contributes to convenient and efficient operation.

Exceptional Resolution at an Ultra-Wide 16mm Angle

The FE 16mm F1.8 G is the ideal lens for capturing dynamic and spectacular wide-angle shots. Its optical design includes two AA (Advanced Aspherical) elements that deliver stunning resolution at all aperture values. One Super ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass element and three ED elements effectively suppress chromatic aberrations all the way to the edges of the frame, and optimized coating minimizes flares and ghosting.

Beautiful G Lens Bokeh and Superb Close-Up Capabilities

The new G Lens series lens provides a beautiful bokeh effect, thanks to its maximum F1.8 aperture with 11 blades. The lens also impresses with excellent close-up capabilities – the minimum focusing distance is just 0.15m with autofocus (or 0.13m with manual focus), and the maximum magnification reaches 0.25x (0.30x with MF). This allows for unique wide-angle shots with deep, exquisite bokeh.

High Light Gathering and Ultra-Wide Coverage in a Compact Body

Thanks to aspherical lenses, including Sony's high-precision AA (Advanced Aspherical) element, this lens offers a full-frame ultra-wide angle in an extremely compact size – just 73.8 x 75mm and a weight of 304g. Small and lightweight, extremely comfortable to carry, while providing stunning image quality for landscapes, architectural scenes, night skies, and many other applications.

Additionally, the lens supports the focus breathing compensation function^[4] with compatible Alpha cameras and works in sync with the active mode^[5] of image stabilization, allowing for stable wide-angle video footage even when moving. The lens features a 67mm filter thread, making it easy to use filters. Its compact design makes it ideally balanced when working with a gimbal system.

Precise Control and High Reliability

The lens features a focus ring, focus hold button, focus mode switch, and aperture ring with a lock switch. Additional functions can be assigned to the focus hold button. The aperture control ring provides direct control, while the click ON/OFF switch adds flexibility. The focus mode switch allows instant switching between autofocus and manual focus. Finally, the dust and moisture-resistant design^[6], as well as the fluorine coating on the front element, ensure maximum reliability and durability.
