Sony Electronics announced a new lens from their G Master series - the FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM OSS II, which delivers an impressive combination of resolution and bokeh and the unprecedented AF (autofocus) performance that Sony's G Master series is known for.
"We listen to what our customers worldwide have to say, and we decided to develop a new, improved version of our 70-200mm F2.8: the G-Master FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM OSS II," said Yann Salmon Legagneur, Director of Product Marketing at Sony Europe B.V. "The improvements we've made to the weight and focusing speed of the new lens are immense and will make a tangible difference in both still photography and video recording. When used with our compact and lightweight full-frame bodies, the lens offers a perfectly balanced and extremely portable combination."
The FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM OSS II is designed to work perfectly with Sony's E-mount cameras, offering not only exceptional optical quality but also excellent AF performance. It is the world's lightest1 70-200mm F2.8 zoom lens, allowing for unprecedented flexibility and freedom in the shooting process. Sony continues to strengthen its Alpha system with its latest addition, which is the 65th lens in the company's E-mount series.

Next-Level Performance
The new FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM OSS II delivers exceptional image quality with high resolution and sharpness. Users can expect a clean and clear image across the entire frame, regardless of the zoom level, even at maximum aperture. Thanks to the two aspherical lens elements, including one XA (extreme aspherical) element precisely manufactured with a tolerance of 0.01 microns, the FE 70-20mm F2.8 GM OSS II effectively limits aberrations associated with long distances to ensure exceptional resolution throughout the image.
The FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM OSS II also uses two spherical ED (extra-low dispersion) elements and two Super ED spherical elements, which significantly reduce chromatic aberrations without color fringing in shadows. For the first time among all Alpha system lenses, this lens also uses an ED aspherical element, which simultaneously suppresses both chromatic and spherical aberrations, common problems in other telephoto lenses.
Smooth and beautiful bokeh is now possible thanks to the wide maximum F2.8 aperture and the newly developed 11-blade circular aperture. In addition, the improved optical design of the lens includes an XA element, which completely suppresses the undesirable onion-ring effect for better bokeh. The FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM OSS II offers excellent performance even in close-up shots with deep bokeh. The minimum focusing distance is only 15.7 inches (0.4 meters) at 70mm and 32.3 inches (0.82 meters) at 200mm, with a maximum magnification of 0.3x. The FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM OSS II can also be easily connected to a Sony 1.4x or 2.0x teleconverter,3 which can extend the focal length to 400mm4 at F5.6 aperture, without sacrificing the quality that only G Master can offer.
To avoid unwanted flares and ghosting even in challenging light, Sony created the original Nano AR Coating II, which achieves uniform anti-reflective coating on the lens surface. The optical design of the FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM OSS II also effectively suppresses internal reflections for enhanced sharpness.
Industry-Leading Autofocus
The FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM OSS II uses the latest lens technologies to bring out the best in the cameras it connects to. The new lens uses four XD (extreme dynamic) linear motors, an original Sony development, for incredibly fast and precise AF, achieving approximately 4 times higher speed2 and up to 30% better tracking focus compared to the previous model2. When used with a top-of-the-line Sony Alpha 1 camera, the FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM OSS II can shoot high-speed bursts up to 30 fps5. Superior tracking AF is also available when using a teleconverter. For video recording, the FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM OSS II offers smooth and quiet AF that reliably locks onto the subject and can track fast-moving subjects, even while zooming, allowing you to confidently leave focusing in the camera's hands.
Advanced Video Recording Features
With a constant maximum F2.8 aperture, impressive AF performance, versatile control options, stability, and reliability, the FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM OSS II is the ideal choice for video recording. The design of the new lens dramatically reduces focus breathing when changing focal length, minimizes focus shift and axial shift when zooming, thereby achieving minimal unwanted frame displacement and minimal variations in the angle of view.
For ease of use in video recording, the FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM OSS II uses separate rings for focus, zoom, and aperture control, allowing for precision even with manual control. The aperture control ring has an on/off "click" option for control. Sony's developed linear response manual focus ensures fast focus response with minimal lag even with manual control. The included lens hood has an opening that allows for convenient operation with circular polarizing filters or variable ND (neutral density) filters for more creative freedom.
Designed with Professionals in Mind
The FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM OSS II is the world's lightest1 F2.8 telephoto zoom lens, being approximately 29% lighter than the previous model with a weight of under 37 oz (1045g). In addition to its light weight, the FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM OSS II is specifically designed with professionals' needs in mind, offering an ideal balance without forward weight shift, ensuring that the lens's center of gravity falls directly over the tripod. The lens also uses internal zooming, which maintains a constant center of gravity.
The FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM OSS II is specifically designed with professionals in mind, based on their direct feedback. The new lens includes focus functions tailored to the needs of professional users, such as full-frame DMF, natural and linear manual focus feedback, and a focus range limiter switch. The FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM OSS II uses three customizable focus hold buttons, positioned 90° apart for easy access and convenient operation from any angle, whether shooting horizontally or vertically.
The FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM OSS II has both a click on/off button and an aperture lock for fast and flexible aperture control. The aperture control ring operates in steps that can be turned on for tactile feedback during shooting or turned off for smooth and silent aperture control during video recording. The rotation of the zoom control ring has been optimized and now includes image stabilization with MODE6 for moving subjects.
The design of the FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM OSS II allows it to be reliable in the most challenging situations. It is dust and moisture resistant7, with a protection rating equal to the FE 400mm F2.8 GM OSS and FE 600mm F4 GM OSS, based on feedback from professional users. The front lens element has a fluorine coating that repels water, grease, and other contaminants, making it much easier to clean dirt and fingerprints that may get on the lens surface.
