Come to the Dynaphos studio to see and feel Ivo Danchev's Ghosts.
“Behind the masks, we are all human, and tradition is the magic that connects us.”
This is what Ivo Danchev states on his Facebook profile. In early March, he won first prize and a gold medal at the National Photographic Contest "Kukerlandia." On March 28th at 7:00 PM, in the Dynaphos studio, he will present his new photo story, featuring Bulgarian Kukeri as the main characters, for the first time with Dilyana Gergova. It is titled Apparitions with Ivo Danchev and transports us to Strandzha, where his lens "sees" the aftermath of a village abandoned by people.
He stumbled upon it while following in the footsteps of the Kukeri for another one of his stories – "The Land of the Kukeri, Between Two Worlds." This project began five years ago with Ivo's idea to travel across the country with a camera in hand, gathering evidence of the still-living Bulgarian masquerade customs, to preserve them for us and showcase them to the world in the magazine he works for – National Geographic. Thus, from 2020 until today, his photographs have toured 18 countries, including Japan, Germany, Spain, Thailand, Russia, and Korea.
What do the Kukeri look like, wandering through the ruins of a once-vibrant Strandzha village? Why do they appear, and what do they convey with their presence in this ghostly place? Come live to our studio to see Ivo Danchev's prints, hear his story, and have a chat. Or watch the event online via our Facebook page. On-site, you can also acquire one of his shots.
