Canon Announces Its Lightest Full-Frame EOS R System Camera

Canon обяви най-лекия пълнокадров фотоапарат от системата EOS R

The EOS R8 is a powerful tool through which photographers can develop their creative skills in full-frame format.

Canon Europe introduces the EOS R8 – a new full-frame mirrorless camera that inherits technologies from the EOS R6 Mark II. Its compactness and dimensions are close to those of the EOS RP, providing photo/video enthusiasts with the tools to exceed their creativity.

The 24.2-megapixel full-frame CMOS sensor, high ISO sensitivity, and improved dynamic range make the EOS R8 an ideal choice for portrait, event, and landscape photography, offering a wider and more artistic perspective. In combination with the new RF 24-50mm F4.5-6.3 IS STM – a small and light RF series zoom lens – photographers will get a compact yet high-performance kit that allows them to follow their creative ideas in full-frame format.

Full-frame quality in a lightweight camera

The EOS R8 features a 24.2-megapixel full-frame CMOS sensor, offering high data readout speed and providing improved performance, including reduced rolling shutter distortion, enabling continuous shooting at 40 fps, as well as high ISO sensitivity up to 102,400 with low noise levels. This makes the EOS R8 ideal for capturing moving subjects in low light. The improved dynamic range also allows for striking images with vibrant colors, and the full-frame sensor provides a shallower depth of field that creates a soft background, emphasizing the subject.

The EOS R8 is Canon's lightest full-frame EOS R system camera to date, weighing 461g (with card and battery). Its compact body is similar in size to the EOS RP, yet it offers a range of additional professional-level features. The electronic viewfinder has a high resolution of 2.36 million dots and a frame rate of up to 120 fps and supports UHS-II SD cards. Shooting on the go is made easier thanks to the intuitive interface and 12 photo and video shooting modes.

Capture life in motion

The advanced sensor of the EOS R8 captures full-width 4K 60p video, oversampled from 6K resolution for sharp and detailed footage, as well as 180fps Full HD video for slow-motion playback. The camera supports Canon Log 3 at 10-bit YCbCr 4:2:2 H.265 internal recording, which offers a greater dynamic range and more flexibility in post-processing. You can also use HDR PQ and HDR Movie modes for an HDR workflow and output a clean HDMI signal (without overlaid indicators) to compatible devices.

To counteract focus breathing during recording, the EOS R8 features a function that compensates for changes in the angle of view when adjusting the focal length. The camera also offers extended video recording intervals1 of up to two hours, ideal for vlogging or events.

Equipped with the same Dual Pixel CMOS AF II system as the EOS R5 and EOS R6 Mark II, the EOS R8 focuses in just 0.03 seconds2 even during continuous shooting at 40 fps with the electronic shutter. The intelligent system recognizes and tracks various subjects, including animals, vehicles, and people, offering head, face, and eye detection for precise focusing. For greater control, it is even possible to choose which eye to prioritize. To simplify the recognition of different subjects, users can select the automatic setting, which determines the subject based on the image composition. The system performs successfully in low light down to -6.5 EV3.

Advanced Communications

Through the built-in 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi® and Bluetooth® communication4, users can easily share captured images using the Camera Connect app, and WPA/WPA2/WPA3-Personal authentication ensures connection security. To assist iPhone owners, the EOS R8 is iOS MFI certifiedTM 5, allowing direct image download and control. The EOS R8 can be used as a webcam, as it supports the UVC/UAC standard. Users with an image.canon subscription can use the neural network image processing tool6 for advanced noise reduction and moiré effect, which provides natural-looking JPEG and HEIF images.

Canon has also updated the image.canon service to make it attractive to a range of new users, with support for Adobe® Lightroom® for video and corporate purposes, ensuring compatibility with an expanded set of services, including Frame.io and Google PhotoTM 7 accounts.

Small and lightweight zoom lens for everyday use

The RF 24-50mm F4.5-6.3 IS STM is a small and lightweight zoom lens with 2x magnification and a wide-angle focal length starting from 24mm – ideal for enhancing photography and videography skills, especially for portraits, interiors, or travel. The advanced image stabilizer for up to 4.5 stops slower shutter speed (up to 7 stops when used with an EOS R camera with built-in image stabilizer (IBIS)) helps content creators and photographers capture video and photos in low light without a tripod. The STM focusing motor is fast and quiet, with a programmable control ring on the lens that allows users to switch between different modes, so they can shoot and record like professionals. The RF 24-50mm F4.5-6.3 IS STM is compatible with a wide range of image enhancement features built into EOS R series cameras, including panoramic stitching and focus breathing correction when recording video.
